Falconer, Ian. Olivia Helps with Christmas. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2006.
Typical Olivia – she wants to help but ends up creating more work. It is Christmas Eve but there is still much to do and Olivia wants to help. She feeds her brother and makes him sick. She untangles the lights and gets wrapped up in them. She sets the table and uses the top of the Christmas tree as a centerpiece. She looks up the chimney for Santa and gets soot on her snout. Olivia is a character most parents can see in their children at times. Ian Falconer seems to understand the heart and actions of a pre school or young elementary aged child. His charcoal and goache illustrations complement the text well – showing details not included in the picture book text.
