Bergren, Lisa, Tawn. God Gave Us Christmas. Art by David Hohn. Colorado Springs, CO: WaterBrook Press, 2006.
A delightful picture book! If you want to steer children to the true meaning of Christmas, God Gave Us Christmas does just that. Lisa Bergren has woven a tale of a young polar bear and his mother who go out searching for Christmas. The text pushes away from Santa
“Who ‘vented Christmas? Was it Santa? No, Mama Bear said. God invented Christmas. God gave us Christmas. Is God more important than Santa? Oh, yes, much more important!”
Mama and Little Cub find God in their surroundings – a good reminder for little ones that God is everywhere – in the things we see and the things we hear in nature.
Mama also stresses that God would have sent Jesus even if Little Cub was the only one and even for the mean animals in the forest.
The illustrations by David Hohn go beyond the text. They are colorful and will appeal to children. If you are looking for additional religious books for your Christmas collection, I recommend God Gave Us Christmas.
