A Savior is Born by Patti Rokus

Patti Rokus develops an interesting concept in her new book. While hiking one day she collected rocks. When she returned home, she started looking more closely at the rocks with the eye of an artist and discovered that she could create scenes from the Christmas story using the rocks.

A Savior is Born: Rocks Tell the Story of Christmas strikes me as more of a coffee table book than a children’s book. It is a nice book to page through but not really something that will hold the attention of children even though it is a picture book. Each page has a short scripture passage taken from the Christmas story and then the illustration Patti Rokus created with her rocks. It really is an interesting idea.

From a teacher’s stand point, I could see this book being a starting point for an art project. Share the book with your students. Then either go out and collect pretty stones or give them a collection to choose from. Have the students re-create scenes from a well-known Bible or other story.

I want to thank Zondervan for the complimentary review copy in exchange for this honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. The book will now be placed in the school library where I serve as librarian.
