One Wintry Night by Ruth Graham

In One Wintry Night Ruth Graham tells the story of the Bible from Creation to the Crucifixion. A young mountain boy is hiking in the days leading up to Christmas as gets stuck in a snow storm. He happens to be near a cabin his great grandfather built years ago so he knocks on the door and asks for help. The woman who owns the cabin now is a kind woman and takes care of his sprained ankle and then tells him the Christmas story, starting with creation and ending with Christ’s crucifixion.

While designed like a picture book, the content of One Wintry Night is more like a chapter book. The book is divided up into chapters which makes this a good read aloud for bed time or for snatches of story time during the school day. It is probably too long for reading in one sitting, especially with younger children.

The illustrations by Richard Watson are very realistic and well done. He used egg tempera on illustration board when painting them.
