Ernst, Lisa Campbell. Round Like a Ball! Maplewood, NJ: Blue Apple Books, 2008.
A guessing game in a book – a great idea. In Round Like a Ball! author/illustrator Lisa Ernst provides small clues to the statement “I’m thinking of something that is…round like a ball.” There is a cut out in each page that shows an increasingly larger portion of the final illustrations. Readers/listeners are given clues like: “has many, many colors;” “it nourishes us;” “is wet and dry;” “is hard and strong;” and “home to us all.”
My littles enjoyed guessing as the book progressed and were so pleased with themselves when they correctly guessed – the earth. They were also quite impressed with the fold out of the end which ends with a spread twice as tall as the book featuring the earth.
Lisa Ernst shows that she understands what children want when looking at a picture book. If you don’t already have a copy in your library, I recommend you pick one up today.
