One of my childhood favorites, I read Bread and Jam for Frances to my first graders today. It happened to be just before lunch and one boy kept saying, “This book is making me hungry.”

Russell Hoban created Frances, who is a badger with many characteristics of a first or second grade girl. She is a very believable character who loves to skip rope and eat bread and jam. Frances would rather eat bread and jam than anything her mother fixes. That is, until that is all her mother gives her. Frances quickly tires of bread and jam and is soon asking for meals like those around her.

Lillian Hoban’s illustrations portray the family of badgers as people. Because of the age of this picture book, it is not done in full color. Only shades of pink and green are used in addition to black.

If you have room in your library for an old classic, I recommend Bread and Jam for Frances.  Bread and Jam for Frances (I Can Read Level 2) is available from Amazon. Thank you for using my affiliate link which helps support this children’s literature blog.
