Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Willems, Mo. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2003.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! is another Caldecott I introduce my students to.  The kiddos love to answer Pigeon when he asks if he can drive the bus. For those of you unfamiliar with this classic – The bus driver leaves his bus to take a break. His instruction as he walks away is “Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus.” As soon as the driver is gone, pigeon does everything he can to convince the reader to let him drive the bus. Mo Willems has shown he understands his audience both in his illustrations and his text. Pre school and early elementary students love this book.

I have used some of the activities and worksheets in this Mo Willems download both during library time and during a summer reading program.

What activities have  you done after reading Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus?

  1. […] With my kinder kiddos we worked on matching the Easy call letters to the author of a book. I sat on the floor with the students and with their help, I completed the Easy call letter match up found in my TpT store. This really is advanced for the kinder level so I sat on the floor with the students and asked them questions to help them understand how the match ups happen. For our story time we read Drummer Hoff and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.  […]
