Emberley, Barbara. Drummer Hoff. Illustrated by Ed Emberley. New York: Simon and Schuster, Inc., 1967.
Drummer Hoff, fired it off! When my now 20-something daughter was 4, Drummer Hoff was her favorite book. We read it to her so many times she memorized it. At the time we were part of a mission organization and at the annual talent show, she “read” the book for the audience. Barbara Emberley showed her knowledge of pre-schoolers and the benefit of repetitive text in this book. Ed Emberley’s vivid illustrations won him the Caldecott.
I am always sure to include Drummer Hoff in my annual Caldecott presentations to my elementary students.
What book have you read to a child so many times that the child memorized it?
