An Interview with Bella Disu
Bella to start off, please tell us a little about yourself.

Bella: I am a business executive with a career spanning almost two decades. I am also a storyteller and a mother to two wonderful children. Storytelling has been part of my identity for as long as I can remember. I was that cousin, sister, and aunt who always shared the wildest tales. As I grew older, I found my comfort zone not just in verbal storytelling but also in writing. Writing feels natural, whether it is picking up a pen and paper or typing on my phone, as it often is these days. Writing allows me to express myself easily—from the flow of ideas to refinement, and this passion gave me the launchpad for crafting my original story.

Question: When you are not writing, What do you do for fun?

Bella: I have a number of things that I enjoy doing to relax. Of absolute priority, is spending time with my family and loved ones. If I’m not having a games night, lunch or watching movies with them, I am usually baking, or relaxing with a pottery class. Recently, I have taken up a love for hiking and have a few trails under my belt. I plan to summit Kilimanjaro sometime in the near future!

Question: What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

Bella: I love to read! As such, I greedily enjoy many different genres and often read multiple books concurrently. As I’m constantly on the path of self-improvement and development; my business strategy and leadership books are never far from me. I also love to read thrillers; the ones that have me have me totally immersed, on edge, and guessing till the denouement. Lastly, I am a hardcore romantic, and I never pass up the chance to curl up with a slow burn romance novel.

Question: When is your favorite time of the year, what do you like about this time of year? And why?

Bella: Most certainly springtime! This season brings with it a promise of brighter days ahead. As grass turns greener, and flowers bloom, I sense that the universe is happier at this color and vibrancy – I am naturally happier this season as I revel in the beauty of nature.

Question: What historical figure do you admire and why?

Bella: Rosa Parks. I admire her courage in fighting for her rights and speaking against oppression. As an adult woman, I must admit that it took me a while to find my voice, and to use that voice to speak against things that needed to change. A few years ago, this voice was found and has gotten louder and clearer ever since. I’m an advocate for change, and I now often engage in social and environmental activism. It’s easier now, in this era, to be inspired by others I see or read about in the news. Rosa Parks spoke up at a time when she didn’t have role models to look up to   – I salute her.

Question: As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

Bella: It would have to be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. This book left me enthralled and spellbound! I remember times I would go into my wardrobe and will myself to be transported to Narnia!

Question: What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Bella: Start writing! That you have the niggling deep within or desire to, means that there’s a fire waiting to be stoked! Start journaling as often as you can. As the inspirations come, either from events or vivid imagination, jot them down. Don’t bother with perfection at the start, refinement will come later.

Thank you for joining me today, Bella. It is always interesting to learn more about the person behind the book.
