My Review

Cummings, Deedee. In the Nick of Time. Illustrated by Charlene Mosley.

Author Deedee Cummings modeled the hero of this story after her own son Nick. It is a cute story with some good messages in it. However, there are some minced oaths which may prohibit some families from wanting their children to read the book. Nick also has a teenage attitude and seems a little old to be the main character in a picture book since picture books are usually meant for preschool and early elementary. Families will want to be aware that Santa plays a role in this story.

Nick does learn a lesson about calling people stupid, which may be helpful to some children who seem to use that word more than they should. He also learns that you can’t always tell if a person is needy by how they act or the clothes they wear. Nick learns how to help a needy classmate and fulfill a Christmas wish, even if he isn’t Saint Nick.

I think librarians will want to read this title before placing it in their K-12 Christian school library to make sure the language is appropriate for their audience.

I received a complimentary copy of In the Nick of Time. This is my honest review.
