their escapades. After the first book, you know the member of the Pond Community behaving badly will redeem her/himself, but how? That is the question and the surprise and the charm of each book. Oh so subtly, young and old alike learn that happiness comes from living graciously, with courtesy, kindness, respect, and compassion for others. My congratulations to the author, Mother Melania, who enables us to learn valuable lessons without lecturing us, and to her illustrator, Cayce-Marie Halsell, who allows us to see the charming animals of the Pond in action. Part of the charm of the illustrations is that they look like they were done with crayons! I loved the effect. The books are perfect for adults to read to younger children and as books for children starting to read on their own. I bought all four for my Godson — two for Christmas and two for his birthday in March. I can’t wait to read them to him. – 5-Star Review on Amazon

Writer and Audience – Seeking Truth Together
What makes a reader want to pick up and keep reading a book? For me, some truth communicated by the book resonates with me. In a silly kid’s book, the truth can be as simple as “It’s good to laugh. Don’t take yourself so seriously.” Often, it’s some basic truth about how to live as human beings in the world. At times, it’s a truth that cuts to the heart. For example, Huck Finn’s willingness to be condemned to hell instead of betraying the most decent person he knows.
Books in that last category are few and far between. I suspect that’s because their authors somehow embody the deep truths presented in the books. So, as a reader, I am connecting with that truth and the person presenting and embodying it.
As a Christian, I believe in absolute truth (indeed I believe in the God Who IS absolute Truth), but I also believe that God created each person with a unique grasp of certain truths. Part of the joy of relationships is recognizing the truth that the other person embodies. And if we are sufficiently alive to that truth, we can start to embody it ourselves.
Which brings me to my relationship as a writer to my readers. One little bit of truth that I see is that there is no me without thee. Imperfect as we are, we all need each other. If we will patiently try to love each other, we will find the truth – and beauty – that God has given uniquely to each. So, as a writer – and a human being – I do my best to offer the truth that I know and to be open to the truths that God has gifted my friends, neighbors, and readers. And by God’s grace, may we find truth – and Truth – together.

Mother Melania is the Abbess of Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga, CA. She grew up in a house that always had tons of children around, her poor parents had to read to her till they were hoarse, and from the moment she learned to read, she always had her nose in a book. So, it was only natural for her to grow up to write children’s books. In her books, she strives to teach virtue in a fun, non-preachy way.
