I just finished reading all four books in this series of heart-warming, lovable characters, who hold your attention throughout
their escapades. After the first book, you know the member of the Pond Community behaving badly will redeem her/himself, but how? That is the question and the surprise and the charm of each book. Oh so subtly, young and old alike learn that happiness comes from living graciously, with courtesy, kindness, respect, and compassion for others. My congratulations to the author, Mother Melania, who enables us to learn valuable lessons without lecturing us, and to her illustrator, Cayce-Marie Halsell, who allows us to see the charming animals of the Pond in action. Part of the charm of the illustrations is that they look like they were done with crayons! I loved the effect. The books are perfect for adults to read to younger children and as books for children starting to read on their own. I bought all four for my Godson — two for Christmas and two for his birthday in March. I can’t wait to read them to him

My Review

Mother Melania. Buster Blue Jay: Not MY Fault! Illustrated by Cayce-Marie Halsell. Calistoga, CA: Holy Assumption Monastery, 2010.

Mother Melania has written a series of books with animals as the characters. In Bluster Blue Jay, readers will learn about accepting responsibility for their actions. Bluster goes for a hike with two of his friends – he is never willing to accept wrongdoing. Mother Melania seems to capture the personality of a know-it-all quite well. Everything that goes wrong, Bluster replies with “it’s not my fault.” Mother Melania subtly teaches a lesson to children through the text of the story.

Cayce-Marie Halsell’s illustrations are colorful and the animals are accurately portrayed. Children will be able to visualize the characters in the story even if they are not familiar with the type of bird portrayed.

One of the things I like about this series is that the books include a link to coloring pages and worksheets for the books. These worksheets can increase the usefulness of these books in a classroom situation.

Bluster Blue Jay: Not MY Fault! would be a good addition to a K-12 Christian school picture book collection.

text well. They will help children better visualize the text.

Capers and Harry could be added to a K-12 Christian school library. I would probably place it in the picture book section.

Mother Melania has created a series of books for elementary children that can be used as read-alouds. Capers and Harry: High Climbing is really a picture story book as there is quite a bit of text on each page. Capers and Harry are a cat and dog who are friends. Capers likes to talk a lot which is fine because Harry is a good listener. Capers gets himself in trouble but is too proud to admit it. Harry, being a good friend, figures out how to help Capers without letting Capers know he is being helped. Mother Melania has a way of teaching lessons in a way that will not necessarily come across as a lesson.

Cayce Grace Kruse created realistic illustrations which complement the text well. They will help children better visualize the text.

Capers and Harry could be added to a K-12 Christian school library. I would probably place it in the picture book section.

Meet the Author:

Mother Melania is the Abbess of Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga, CA. She grew up in a house that always had tons of children around, her poor parents had to read to her till they were hoarse, and from the moment she learned to read, she always had her nose in a book. So, it was only natural for her to grow up to write children’s books. In her books, she strives to teach virtue in a fun, non-preachy way.
