Hernandez, Betsy, and Donny Monk. Silent Night: a mouse tale. Illustrated by Joe Boddy. Nashville, TN: Sparrow Press, 1992.
Do you know the story behind the creation of the traditional Christmas carol “Silent Night”? Legend has it that mice ate through the bellows of a church organ causing the choir director to write a new Christmas carol which could be sung to guitar accompaniment. Silent Night: a mouse tale tells the story from the point of view of a young mouse.
Betsy Hernandez and Donny Monk have written an engaging story, one that children will enjoy. They have used their imagination to come up with a possible story looking at the “why” behind the chewing on the bellows. The illustrations by Joe Boddy are in muted colors and complement the story. There is much text on each page so this picture book is designed for older children – second to fourth grade.
