Another of my favorites that I share at the end of the school year, Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent was written and illustrated by Bill Peet. Cyrus is actually a friendly sea serpent who has been called a sissy and challenged to go sink a ship. He goes to the docks and hears and old man calling down curses on a ship about to leave on a voyage. He follows that ship out to sea and helps it through the doldrums, through a storm, and against a pirate ship. The illustrations complement the text well in this picture book.

The book does get a little long as a read aloud and sometimes the kiddos get a little restless, but I enjoy Bill Peet’s work and love sharing it with my students.
