Jenkins, Steve & Robin Page. What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2003.
My littles love this book. As we read through it they guess which animals are represented on each page. There are two 2-page spreads devoted to each question asked in the book. Questions such as: What would you do with a nose like this? What would you do with ears like these? What would you do with a tail like this? and 3 more.
The first portion of the picture book is written in an easy-to-understand format with just a sentence about each of the animals represented. The book ends with more detailed notes about the different body parts and animals so that those who want more information can easily find it.
Steve Jenkins and Robin Page chose topics of interest to children for this Caldecott honor book. Their illustrations are in a collage format which teachers and librarians could use as a starting point for follow up projects. The text could also be used as a starting point for research projects. The book may even work as a model for Young Author Day writing projects.

We started working on information found on front covers of books – Title and Author – with a worksheet from Teaching Library Media Skills in Grades K-6. We did most of the work together which made it about following directions as well. […]
