Barnes, Laura T. Ernest’s Special Christmas. Illustrated by Carol A. Camburn. Sergeantsville, NJ: Barnesyard Books, 2003.
Ernest’s Special Christmas takes a look at the values of love and spending time with friends that is prevalent this time of year. All of the characters are animals who live in the same barnyard: Chester, an old draft horse; Ernest, a miniature donkey; and other horses and donkeys and even some cows. It is Christmas Eve and the animals are anticipating spending time together. But, Ernest cannot find Chester. He sets off across the field looking for him. As the snow starts falling, Ernest has a harder time walking. He eventually finds Chester who has fallen and can’t get up. Ernest gets the other animals and together they help Chester get back on his feet and return to the barn for Christmas. Barnes has written a cute story for the Christmas season and Camburn’s illustrations complement the text well.
