My Review

Roman, Carole P. Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex. 2022.

The first thing that appealed to me about Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex was that the main characters have some challenges in their lives. Grady has asthma and it appears that Arusha might be on the Autism Spectrum. Carole P. Roman has done a good job of portraying these characters as well-functioning young people

Templeton Academy is a new elite school recruiting students from around the world. Both boys want to attend. Grady’s uncle, who is his guardian, is opposed but won’t give reasons why. Arusha applies and is accepted. Without his knowledge, Arusha also applies in Grady’s name, so it is a surprise to Grady when he gets an acceptance letter. Unfortunately, so does Elwood, the bully who torments them.

The teachers teach the students in “new” ways that somewhat resemble neuroplasticity. Their philosophy is that you can control things with your mind/thoughts. Readers need to keep in mind that this a fantasy story while there might be parts of it that are based in science. Weird things happen that the kids and their friends aren’t sure about.

Bullies will be bullies no matter what school they are in. The daughter of the founder is enamored with power. She entices Elwood to follow. The story is one of good vs. evil. In addition to finding your strengths and using them.

The author calls this a high school adventure for an 18+ audience. However, due to the age of the characters (eighth and ninth grade) the book is more appropriate for the middle school audience.

I enjoyed this story and hope it is the start to a series.

I recommend that K-12 Christian school librarians read Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex before adding it to their library. The book does use minced oaths and phrases like “holy crap” quite regularly. There is also the element of thoughts becoming reality which some audiences may have a problem with.

I received a complimentary copy of Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex. This is my honest review.
