What Makes Me…Me is a story about harnessing your super powered brain. We are all special and unique and our differences are what make us all special. What Makes Me…Me was written especially for those kids with neurological differences, their families, and their friends.
Baldwin, Anne and Levi. What Makes Me…Me. Illustrated by QBN Studios. Anne Baldwin, 2021.
I am a firm believer that children need to see themselves in the books they read. Yet not every disability, diagnosis, or difference is represented in children’s books. That’s when parents, caregivers, and loved ones with a gift of writing step up and create a book featuring their child’s differences.
When Anne’s son was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome she couldn’t find much that would help him (or his friends/classmates) understand what was happening. Anne and her son Levi start with an explanation of how the brain behaves for most people. They then go on to explain how the brain of someone with Tourette Syndrome behaves. The book is well-written and in language that even preschoolers can understand this difference in brain behavior.
The illustrations of QBN Studios complement the text well and show children what is being described in the text.
What Makes Me…Me would be a great resource for the recently diagnosed as well as for those who will be with that child on a regular basis.
What Makes Me…Me would make a great addition to a special ed classroom, regular classroom, home library or any school/church library – especially if there are people in the community with Tourette Syndrome.
I received a complimentary copy of What Makes Me…Me. This is my honest review.
