Written in rhyme, If I Could Ask Jesus invites children to imagine the lives of angels in heaven. How do they grow wings on their backs? Do they have scooters and skateboards and snacks? At the end, children will be delighted to discover that God’s angels are really mighty warriors who watch over them and protect them each day.

My Review

Wyland, Donna. If I Could Ask Jesus. Art by Lynne Marie Davis. Plymouth, MA: Elk Lake Publishing, 2018.

Preschoolers and early elementary children ask a lot of questions – just ask a parent, grandparent or teacher. Donna Wyland has captured this inquisitiveness in the text of If I Could Ask Jesus. Have you ever thought about what you would ask Jesus? If you are young, you’d probably ask about things related to life as you know it – do angels ride skateboards? Do angels eat broccoli? While none of the questions are actually answered in the text, they do provide a springboard for discussions between young ones and the adults reading to them.

Lynne Marie Davis used whimsical characters and pastel colors to illustrate the text. For the most part the illustrations complement the text well although there are one or two instances where the illustrations do not match the information in the text – light blue clothing when the text refers to white, in one instance.

Preschool and early elementary-aged children will enjoy this book and it could easily become a favorite.

If I Could Ask Jesus is appropriate for a K-12 Christian school library, classroom library, church library, or home library. I think preschoolers and early elementary aged children will enjoy it. I received a complimentary copy of If I Could Ask Jesus. This is my honest review.

More from Donna

Having experienced much loss early in life, God gave me a heart and a longing to know all I can about living forever with Him in heaven. I did not set out to write If I Could Ask Jesus, but God through the Holy Spirit chose to create it through me. Whether writing for children or adults, I feel that my purpose is to bring the hope of heaven and the joy of the Lord to people wherever they are.
