Interview with Cassie

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve loved reading and writing since I was very young. I’ve wanted to create magical escapes ever since I was old enough to read. On a trip to my parents’ house, I found notebooks full of my stories from when I was in elementary school. They are entertaining!

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I am a perfusionist. A perfusionist operates the heart-lung machine for open heart surgery. I have two young boys who keep me on my toes! When I’m not working full-time (or writing), I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, being outside, and reading.

What children’s book authors and illustrators have influenced your work?

Eric Carle, Holly Keller, and other authors/illustrators who have found creative ways to mask science lessons into captivating stories have strongly influenced my work. I also admire Bill Martin’s work. I was amazed the first time my son recited Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

Your book has similarities to Bill Martin’s books like Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Where did the idea come from to use an egg theme?

We love Brown Bear, Brown Bear! The simplicity and repetition made this book a quick favorite at our house. My three-year-old is full of questions. We saw a bird’s nest one day, and after that, he kept asking which animals hatch from eggs. I couldn’t find a book with all of these animals, so I decided to make my own. It started with some very rough sketches and printed images to accompany the simple, repetitive phrase. My son loved it so much; I thought other children might enjoy it too!
I love it when our children lead us into something needed in the world of books.
Do you have any more books planned? What can you tell us about them?

I do! I’m very excited about my second book, I Miss You Most. It will be released this fall! I share a summary and a sneak peek of an illustration on my web site (link below).

Love knows no distance. I Miss You Most helps children through the heartache of distance by showing them how to hold their loved ones near. Whether exploring the seas as pirates or twirling like ballerinas, imagination can bridge even the greatest distance. Because time with those you love is the most magical thing of all!
