MEET REBECCA WATERS

I want to thank Rebecca for taking a few moments with us to today to answer a few questions.

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I knew I wanted to be an author in second grade. My second grade teacher submitted a story I wrote to the school newspaper and they published it.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I am a mother and grandmother. I volunteer at church and served as a missionary in Kosovo. I still have ties there. For fun I am fairly adventurous. I enjoy hiking and traveling, snow skiing and I love the ocean.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

I love to read legal thrillers. I like the complexity of plot, the fast pace, and trying to figure out what is really happening in the story.

What is your favorite holiday? And why?

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the simplicity of it and focus of gathering family and friends together to give thanks. Of course there’s the food…

What historical figure do you admire and why?

I’m choosing from recent history here: Mother Teresa. I appreciate her willingness to serve in even the smallest ways. She was humble and did not seek the notoriety given to her. She simply did what God called her to do.

In a library or a bookstore – what section do you head to first?

Curiously, though I write fiction, I think I head to the children’s section first to see what might be there for my grandchildren. I was an elementary teacher and know the power of literature.

Because I am a K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

Now I see this question! I’m going to say Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. I have used it as a read aloud to children as early as first grade. When I was teaching in Kosovo, I actually used it as the platform to teach every subject until our books arrived.

Every year I organize a Young Authors Day for the kids at our school. What advice would you give to a child who wants to be a writer?

Write. If you want to be a writer you have to practice writing. But beyond that, I would tell them to never take your own writing so seriously that you aren’t willing to revise what you’ve written and make changes for the better when someone suggests them.
