Young, Ed. Seven Blind Mice. New York: Philomel Books, 1992.
In this picture book re-telling of “The Blind Men and the Elephant,” Ed Young uses seven blind mice to investigate the new Something by the pond. Each of the mice “sees” a different part of the Something and determines what it is, based on the part he “saw.”
The story is illustrated using a collage format. Seven Blind Mice would be a great springboard for an art lesson on collage. Ed Young was awarded a Caldecott Honor for his illustrations.
It could also be a story starter as an example of re-telling a tale. Students could be assigned to find a tale and then re-tell it.
If you do not already have Seven Blind Mice in your collection, I recommend adding it.
