A Perfect Day

Smith, Lane. A Perfect Day. New York: Roaring Brook Press, 2017.

Perfect Day

I love this book. The artwork is delightful and the text simple yet engaging. A Perfect Day tells the story of Bert, pictured as a boy, who feeds the the animals who visit his yard until a bear comes and takes their food. The story line is one that children will enjoy – it is surprising. Everything is calm and peaceful – all are being taken care of. Then a bear shows up and disrupts everything.

Lane Smith used mixed media to create his artwork. Some appears to be sponge painting, other parts as collage, with some sketching and painting included as well. A Perfect Day could be used as a springboard for an art lesson – trying to replicate the techniques shown in the book.

A Perfect Day is on this year’s Land of Enchantment List and I will be adding it to my library. I can’t wait to share this picture book with my students. You will want to consider adding it even if you do not live in New Mexico or participate in the Land of Enchantment Award.

A Perfect Day is available from Amazon.
