Graham, Franklin with Estelle Condra. Miracle in a Shoe Box: A Christmas Gift of Wonder. Illustrated by Dilleen Marsh. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishing, 1995.
During November each year the students at our school pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child. My daughter usually heads this project up as it is near to her heart. She used to receive these boxes when our family was serving as missionaries on the Navajo reservation. Each year before the children pack boxes, she reads the picture book Miracle in a Shoe Boxto the students. So many of the students we work with have no idea what life is like outside of our community.
Franklin Graham gives a great overview of how some families shop for things to put in their boxes in a story format. He also talks about what life is like for the children who will be receiving those boxes. Dileen Marsh chose muted tones and an impressionistic style to create her illustrations. The style really goes well with the story.
If your class or family is participating in Operation Christmas Child, I recommend reading this book as you go through the process of purchasing items and packing your boxes.
