Brett, Jan. Gingerbread Friends. New York: Scholastic, 2008.

I read this picture book for the first time this week as part of my month of holiday books. It was a fun read for my third graders. It is a story about finding friends. Gingerbread Baby sees his boy playing with friends and wants to find friends of his own. Gingerbread Friends is the story of his unfruitful search for friends. His boy surprises him with friends who are like him when he returns home after his search.  It is a delightful play on the traditional Gingerbread Man story.  Teachers could do a compare and contrast between the book and the traditional story.

Jan Brett’s illustrations are done in watercolor and gouache. As always, her artwork is enjoyable to look at and definitely appeals to children.
