African American writer Richard Wright died in 1960 but none of his more than 4000 Haiku were published until 1998. Nina Crews collected twelve of them in Seeing Into Tomorrow. Her biography of Wright starts and ends the book. She chose to use a photo collage technique to illustrate the text. She also chose African American boys as her models to represent life through the eyes of African American. The technique she chose is very appealing to the eye, yet different from many picture books.

Seeing Into Tomorrow will be a great addition to a poetry collection and find a place in Poetry units. I will also be including this picture book in my Mock Caldecott unit later this fall.

Seeing Into Tomorrow would be a great addition to your poetry collection. If you use my affiliate link it will not cost you more but will help support this children’s literature blog.
