Another favorite picture book from my childhood – I always enjoy sharing old favorites with my students. P. D. Eastman had a gift for writing text that appeals to children while having a controlled vocabulary. Sam and the Firefly also helps teach students to recognize right from wrong.

Sam, an owl, comes out at night, looking for a friend. He spots a light going on and off and comes upon the firefly. Sam teaches the firefly to play word games. They have a lot of fun until the firefly decides to use his words as a trick which causes some trouble.  Sam and the Firefly is a great read aloud for early elementary as well as a good read alone (or with help) for those learning to read.
