Waddell, Martin. Room for a Little One. Illustrated by Jason Cockcroft. New York: Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2004.
Room for a Little One is a heartwarming tale about a Kind Ox inviting various creatures into his warm stable one cold winter’s night. As the creatures gather, they sense an atmosphere of safety – dog, cat, mouse all rest together. Finally a Tired Donkey comes to the stable bringing Mary and Joseph. And, the little one is born. The phrase “There’s always room for a little one here” is repeated several times throughout the book. Waddell’s simple text combined with Cockcroft’s beautiful acrylic paintings make this a beautiful book for reading to children at Christmas time.
