Out of Wonder

Alexander, Kwame with Chris Colderly and Marjory Wentworth. Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets. Illustrated by Ekua Holmes. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press, 2017.

Alexander and his collaborators, Colderley and Wentworth have written a collection of poems in the style of a variety of famous poets as well as poems which are a tribute to famous poets. Out of Wonder would be a great addition to a poetry unit or to a collection of books used during Poetry Month in the spring. Out of Wonder has been mentioned by some as being worthy of the Caldecott award. Ekua Holmes illustrations are wonderful. Using a collage technique, Holmes shows versatility in her craft. While the technique is the same, each illustration has a different style, a style which complements the topic of the poem it illustrates. Out of Wonder will be in the stack of books I use with my fifth graders this year for our Animoto/Mock Caldecott unit later this fall.

Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets is available from Amazon.
