One of the 2015 Caldecott Honor Books, Sam & Dave Dig a Hole is an enjoyable picture book. Jon Klassen’s illustrations are realistic. They go beyond the text and tell part of the story. They are done in colored pencil and digitally. Barnett’s text is simple and compliments the illustrations. Young children will love the fact that they can see things in the illustrations that main characters Sam and Dave cannot see – the treasure for which they are digging but which their hole goes past without touching.
