My Review:

Honaker, Karen and Kathy. Traveling Tootsie. Illustrated by Chiara Civati. Herndon, VA: Mascot Books, 2022.

I love the concept behind this book. It is one parents can use if they have to travel a lot and leave their children behind. Karen and Kathy Honake based this book on a childhood memory. 

Katie and Steven are upset that they are once again being left home when Dad travels. They come up with an idea to send one of their small stuffed animals along to explore for them. After this trip to Washington DC Traveling Tootsie tells the children (and readers) about some of the sights they see. 

Children whose parents travel will relate to the main characters in this book. I think this story can be used as a suggestion/start for a family activity. It can also be used as an idea for a creative writing assignment. 

Chiari Civati’s illustrations have a cartoon feel to them. They complement the text well. Civati was able to capture the feelings of the characters in their facial expression. 

Traveling Tootsie would be a good addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian school library.

Meet the Authors – Kathy and Karen Honaker:

Kathy and Karen grew up in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Virginia as teenagers. They enjoyed many family vacations, which began their love of travel. They both reside in Virginia with their families and continue to instill a love of travel with their own children. This is their first children’s book written together, about a favorite childhood memory that they always wanted to share with others to enjoy. They hope to inspire a sense of adventure in you!
