AN INTERVIEW WITH TARA RANDEL

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I loved reading when I was growing up, but it wasn’t until I was out of college that a coworker introduced me to the romance genre. I had previously read only a few popular romance author’s novels, but once I broadened my author base, I fell in love. The same coworker decided that we could write a book. Having no experience and not really enjoying creative writing in school, I laughed, but she was serious. Long story short, I did the research, joined Romance Writers of America to learn writing craft and the business end of publishing and eventually sold the book that started my career. My friend did not.

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

My husband and I own a small business, so I switch gears on my non-writing days and do the bookkeeping for our company. I enjoy taking workout classes at the gym, spending time with friends and going to Disney World with my daughter.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?

My favorite genre is a toss-up between romance and mystery or a combination of both. I love the hope romance brings and I love solving the puzzles of a mystery.

What is your favorite holiday? And why?

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I love autumn and Thanksgiving is the pinnacle of fall. I took over the task of making dinner for the holiday years ago, so I always look forward to the preparation and inviting family and guests for dinner.

What historical figure do you admire and why?

I have always admired Queen Elizabeth II. There was always a strength of character about her, an air of conviction and integrity. She seemed to love her family as well as her people. While at a young age she could have shun the responsibility that fell on her shoulders when her father died, instead, she rose to the challenge, a wonderful example for everyone today. She was a class act and will be greatly missed.

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

I always loved Go Dog Go by P.D. Eastman. I ran across it while visiting cousins when I was little. I would spend hours looking at the illustrations and imagining myself in that world.

That is one of my favorites as well!

What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

My advice to anyone who wants to write is this; go for it. Keep a journal and write down any thoughts and ideas that come to you. If you have a story in your head, start writing it down. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but getting the words on paper is a great start.

Thanks so much for joining me today. I love learning more about authors and so do my readers.
