Valen and the Beasts is labeled as book 1.1 in G.J. Kemp’s Acre series. I would label it a prequel as all the events in the story take place before Juno and the Lady which is the first book in the series.
Valen and the Beasts focuses on Valen and his interaction with the authorities of Fairacre as well as with the Sewer Rats. I enjoyed this story and found it to be well-written, better than book 1. The dialogue seems to flow freely and the plot follows a logical pattern. There is still a little back story that seems to be missing, maybe it will come out in future books. Questions I was left with – Where did Valen come from to be considered an outsider? How does Valen know Naomi or Mr. Hargreaves?
If you read my earlier review of Juno and the Lady you saw that I didn’t think it was appropriate for teens. If it weren’t for that I would have no probably recommending Valen and the Beasts for a teen audience. But since it is a lead-in to a book that is not for the teen audience, I cannot recommend Valen and the Beasts for teens.
While not necessary, I think adults would benefit from reading Valen and the Beasts before reading other books in the series. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
