Melissa Stuart lives in Los Angeles, California with her family, their English Mastiff, Gucci, and their pony, Luna! Melissa and her husband stay busy traveling all over the country with their boys’ hockey teams. She loves being a Hockey Mom and watching her boys chase their dream of following in their dad’s footsteps to play in the NHL! Her happy place is with her little girl, Stella, at the barn surrounded by horses and their precious Luna. Sun Valley, Idaho is her family’s favorite summer getaway destination. When they’re there, Melissa feels most inspired to write sitting by the river, surrounded by mountains and nature! Her dream of becoming a published author for the first time came true in early 2021, as she shared her story “Find Your Sunshine” in a book co-written by 10 other inspiring authors—all of whom were sharing stories about shining their light and becoming difference makers in the world! Melissa hopes this story will inspire children to always look up. She wishes to teach them that true joy comes when we shine our
own light and show kindness to others. That’s the secret to finding our sunshine!

When did you first know you wanted to be an Author?

I used to love writing as a young girl and dreamed of becoming an Author!  But the years flew by and life took me in a different direction . I was busy raising my kids and focused on my Fitness career.  Now I couldn’t be happier to have found my passion for writing again after all these years !

When you are not writing,  what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I am a mom of 3 kids and their schedules keep me very busy! My 2 teenage sons play AAA Travel Hockey so most of the time I am flying all over the country for their games and tournaments! My daughter is 6 and she is now busy with her after school sports and activities. So my writing time is limited to mornings when they are off to school. For fun I am always at the barn taking care of our sweet pony Luna and watching my little girl ride ! Surrounded by horses and watching my kids do what they love is my favorite thing to do and place to be.

What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you ?

I mostly read Autobiography or Memoirs . I love reading true stories about people’s journeys, struggles and victory’s in life .  I feel like it  helps us connect to others who have gone down the same road as we may be on.

What is your vacation destination? Why?

My family’s favorite vacation spot is Sun Valley Idaho ! We spend a few weeks in the summer time there and occasionally in the Winter. I grew up going to my family’s cabin by the river there as a young girl. Now I love seeing my kids loving it and making memories with them there .

Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book ?

This book is based on my real life events. The beautiful yellow butterfly represents my grandmother who had passed 3 years ago. It seemed like every time I was out riding a horse a yellow butterfly would fly around me. When my back ruptured after a day of horseback riding a few months later,  I could no longer do what I loved the most, ( teach fitness classes and ride horses) and I felt like I was stuck under a dark cloud. It wasn’t until I started finding joy in watching my daughter ride and just being around nature , horses and joining charities and giving back to others,  did I find my sunshine again. I wanted to write my story to inspire others who maybe stuck under a dark cloud of their own.

As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask -what is your favorite children’s book?

My favorite Children’s Book will always be Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

That is one of my favorites as well.

What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer ?

Keep dreaming and working towards your goal and one day it will pay off ! Never give up or let anything get in the way of your dreams!

Thank you  so much for joining me today, Melissa. It is always fun to learn more about authors.
