After Catherine Reed’s husband dies in a tragic logging accident, Catherine and her four-year-old daughter, Clair, move home with Clair’s mother and brother in order to accept a new position as the teacher for the town’s one-room schoolhouse. But Catherine carries a dark secret that she hasn’t even shared with her mother. Will she ever find forgiveness?
Samuel Harris has suffered his own loss, losing his wife and unborn child over a year prior. Although he is the town’s preacher, he struggles to trust God, blaming God for allowing him to be absent when his wife died. The guilt has burdened him ever since. But when his old flame Catherine Reed comes back to town, he wonders if they can find healing together.
Catherine believes that anyone who wants to learn should be allowed to learn, but she is quick to find a town divided on that issue. As she and Samuel set out to change people’s minds in a post-Civil War era, they find themselves drawn to each other over and over again. As they join together for the same cause, could they also find a second chance at happiness?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR – Greta Picklesimer
An Interview with Greta Picklesimer
When did you first know you wanted to be an author?
I first knew I wanted to be a writer when I was eight-years-old. My eldest sister wrote an article which appeared in a regional magazine and brought it over to share with the family. My parents praised her efforts. I decided I wanted to be a writer after that. My first stories were very short. They were about people living on the sun and in sunbeams. I loved the feeling writing gave me. I could create my own worlds and order them. It was a very powerful feeling. It still is a powerful feeling.
When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?
What I do for fun is work on my art journal. I enjoy painting pages and either writing about the happenings that day/week, etc. And then embellish the page with stickers or words or scripture that is meaningful to me.
What is your favorite genre to read? What about that genre draws you?
My favorite genre to read is also my favorite genre to write. I love to read Christian historical romance set in the 1870s-1890s.
Summer is coming – describe your favorite vacation.
I don’t go on vacations unless it has something to do with writing. I plan to attend the American Christian Fiction Writers National Conference this year (my first year attending) in St. Louis Missouri in September.
What historical figure do you admire and why?
The only one that comes to mind is Jesus. I admire him for so many reasons. He is my Savior, my confidante, my friend and hero.
As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?
My absolute favorite children’s book(s) are the Chronicles of Narnia especially The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?
Keep a journal and start writing even if your writing is not up to par. Let your thoughts flow. Join a local writer’s group or start your own. Keep writing and learning by reading books like the ones you want to write. Don’t give up.
Thanks so much for joining me on my blog today Greta. I love sharing authors with my audience.
