About the Author – Kristen Joy Wilks

Kristen Joy Wilks lives in the beautiful woods of the Cascade mountains with her camp director husband, three fierce sons, and a large and slobbery Newfoundland dog. She spent her misguided youth falling in love with Commander Spock via Star Trek reruns, being suspended upside down over a homemade pit filled with gardener snakes, and stampeding herds of elk while on horseback. Now most of her adventures consist of preventing her hubby from filling another wall of their dining room with board games, thwarting her 3 boys’ efforts to sneak their pet chickens onto their bunk beds whenever she turns her back to fold laundry, and trying not to trip over the random teenagers that swarm her house to play all those board games.

Have you ever gotten stuck with someone else’s luggage? How about someone else’s dog? Let’s make that someone else’s ill-mannered, 150lb, Newfoundland dog!

Yes, Morgan, my poor heroine just wanted to discover her roots during a calm tour of Copenhagen, Denmark. What she gets … a wild chase through a foreign city with a giant and hairy beast in tow!

We have owned two wonderful Newfoundland dogs and they are truly gentle giants … once they grow up. But that training process is a sight to behold when your “puppy” weighs 100lbs before he reaches his first birthday and doesn’t even notice you bouncing along behind him as he charges for the lake.

Our first Newfoundland, Shamu, ended up weighing a hefty 163lbs in his prime and was a handful for those first few training years. Thus, I have taken some of our crazy dog stories and used them to harass my hapless heroine during her Danish vacation. Shamu would gallop toward any body of water he spotted. A lake, river, nice fountain, you name it! If you happened to be dragged along with him, he didn’t mind. The more the merrier! Don’t worry, there is plenty of water in Copenhagen to tempt a fun-loving Newfoundland dog. One might see various fountains, a paddle boat pond in Tivoli Gardens, or even a restaurant that is actually a pirate ship floating on a lake. Add a bunch of dog hair and slobber and this crazy RomCom hits a bit close to home for someone who actually owns a Newfoundland dog.

An Interview with Kristen Joy Wilks

How long did it take to write this novel?

Well, I had been writing almost every day while purposely trying to get published for thirteen years at that point. Then, when my sister-in-law saw that an editor at our upcoming writer’s conference wanted romances set in other countries, she dared me to write one before we attended. In a mad rush, I wrote the story in one month (this was after taking five years for my previous manuscript, ha!) and then edited it for a month and then the conference day arrived. Thankfully, the editor loved it and provided me with more help in polishing it up for publication.

Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?

Anyone who has owned a Newfoundland dog will tell you that they are good protectors. What is funny though, is that they are also kind and very sweet protectors. I can’t argue with my husband without Leia (our current Newf) squeezing between us on the couch and giving me stern slobbers and wags, ha! I loved writing the scene where poor Morgan needs to be rescued and Leroy. The 150lb Newfoundland saves the day … in his own special way.

“I struggled in Maks’s arms. It was like trying to push away from a glacier. But my laughable efforts did alert Leroy to my peril. Leroy’s head snapped up and he bounded to smother Maks with debilitating wags and kisses.”

And another favorite:

             “Much chasing and wrestling and shedding ensued.”

What do you hope readers will take away from this novel?

I have so much that I want to share with readers. The delight of a good story. The joy of falling in love and the peace of a fuzzy animal cuddling close. When that animal is not covered in mud and dragging you though the park, that is! God’s presence and care when absolutely everything is going wrong and doesn’t make sense. Struggle and triumph and joy through the journey. But I also want to share laughter with readers. I have faced too many seasons of grieving, the loss of my dad when I was a teen was the first one and grief keeps stepping through our door again and again. I find rest and hope in times of sorrow through laughter. I hope that my readers laugh. Laughter is healing, builds community as we share all the funny things together, and is truly a gift from God! God keeps sending me funny experiences to brighten my day. I want to use those to spark stories that will bless others during hard times. So yes, I hope they laugh!

How many bookshelves are in your home?

Well, we only have five, but that doesn’t mean that we just have five bookshelves worth of books. Oh, no! We live in a two-bedroom apartment at a Bible camp with three teen sons and a Newfoundland dog and there isn’t tons of room. What space we have is filled with strategy board games and books! There are piles of books, boxes full of books under the bed and in the closet, dangerous leaning towers of books that might leap out and crush you at any moment. I buy a book for each son every month and save it. When I catch them doing something wonderful, I scribble a note about it inside the cover and give him the book. We spend so much time correcting our children, I wanted to make sure to make note of when they are doing a good job. Those books are really piling up, but it is so worth it! Thankfully, I stick to reading library books or e-books on my Nook so that helps keep the dangerous piles down to a dragon’s hoard of reading material.

Who is the author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?

That’s a hard one … probably Bethany Turner!

In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?

I get up early (around 4:00AM), stumble around getting my coffee, and write in my cushy chair in our living room before the house awakens. I love the quiet and peace of the dark morning hours. Our Newfoundland, Princess Leia Freyja, flops out on the floor nearby to keep me company.
