‘Twas the Night Before Jesus is a beautifully illustrated picture book that introduces children to the life of Jesus and God’s promise of an eternal home in heaven. As the melodic rhyme carries children through Jesus’s birth, death and resurrection, they come to understand the true meaning of Christmas.

My Review

Wyland, Donna. ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus. Illustrated by Courtney Smith. Plymouth, MA: Elk Lake Publishing, 2021.

‘Twas the Night Before Jesus is written in the same cadence as the famous tale ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Donna Wyland tells the life story of Jesus in this new book. I appreciate that she doesn’t stop with just the Christmas story but tells the entire story of Christ from birth to Ascension in a way that younger children will be able to understand.

Courtney Smith chose a whimsical style for her illustrations. I appreciate the fact that while there are characters whose skin is very white, Smith used a darker pigment for Jesus’ skin tones in most of the pictures which depict Him.

‘Twas the Night Before Jesus could find a place in a K-12 Christian School library. It is a book that can be enjoyed year-round but especially at Christmas and Easter. It could also find a place in church, classroom, or home libraries. It is appropriate for preschoolers and elementary-aged children.

I received a complimentary copy of ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus. This is my honest review.
