In a search for a book that presented the beauty and mystery of the advent season with elegance and simplicity meant to be enjoyed by the entire family, God Is Coming was born. This Advent Journey traces the story of God’s relentless pursuit of His children and all of the anticipation of the holiday season in simple, rhyme and meter. Children and adults alike will be touched by the reminders of the profound truths of the gospel and families will return to these stories and these iconic images year after year.

Philpot, Maggie. God is Coming: An Advent Journey. Illustrated by Michael Livesay-Wright. Fort Worth, TX: Spark & Spirit, 2020.
The stories and illustrations in God is Coming: An Advent Journey remind me of a Jesse Tree. Maggie Philpot uses rhyming text to tell the story of the Bible in 25 days. Each devotional includes the phrase “God is Coming.” The book closes with a section with scripture passages for each day in addition to discussion questions.
The illustrations by Michael Livesay-Wright are nice illustrations and complement the text well, however they are not in a style that will appeal to most children.
One thing that would make this book more usable as a family devotional would be activities, Christmas ornaments, or coloring pages to complement each day’s devotionals.
Because it covers the first 25 days of December, the best use of God is Coming would be in a home situation. Church and school libraries may want to keep a copy in their collection to make it available to their families.
I received a complimentary copy of God is Coming. This is my honest review.
About the Author – Maggie Philpot
Maggie Philpot wrote her first children’s story when she was in middle school (a story about an egg named Eggbert) and she has been dreaming up stories ever since. She lives in Fort Worth with her spectacular husband (whom she calls Husband), her two precocious children, and a rather ridiculous dog, Tucker. She is passionate about anything and anyone who attempts to make beauty, order, and meaning in this crazy world. The simple act of writing is one way to do just that.
