Peter and Mary Beth Chandler kept their Confederate bank on the gold standard. However, a Confederate officer asked for a loan. He insisted he should be able to repay in Confederate bank notes not backed by gold. If they refuse, he will label them traitors. Should the Chandlers change their loan requirements and risk losing the bank? The entire town questioned their loyalty, especially when the officer turned up dead. Will the Chandlers be court martialed or lose the bank? While facing an impossible situation, they seek God’s guidance and learn to reflect his love.

More from Cynthia
The same year my first book came out, my husband came down with encephalitis. In simple terms, his brain was infected. He’d been sick for several days with a mild headache and temperature, and our doctor thought he had the flu. One morning I watched him slide into the floor as a grand mal seizure ravaged his body. I remember thinking this couldn’t be happening. I’m a nurse, and I was reviewing his medical history in my mind. Seizures didn’t fit with anything on either side of his family, and I wanted to deny what I saw. Needless to say, our life changed dramatically for several years as we walked through dark times. My husband spent 11 days in intermediate intensive care and came home on IV medications. For several weeks he had partial seizures the doctors couldn’t control. However, I learned so much during that time, and I’ve shared lessons from that time. In Reflecting Gold, I demonstrate how we can reflect the beauty of God even in the middle of heartbreak.
An Interview with Cynthia
When did you first know you wanted to be an author? I have always loved words. When I was ten or eleven, I started writing a book. However, my brother teased me, and I stopped, embarrassed. Years later, I homeschooled my five children and taught them to read and write. As I launched into grammar, I announced, “I’m giving you a box of tools to use for writing.” Once they began leaving home, I started using those same tools I’d been teaching. I wrote my first book in 2008.
When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun? I have more hobbies than I have kids, and that’s dangerous. LOL. I grow orchids, which is why my logo is an orchid with a pen. I also make jewelry with my disabled son, arrange flowers, sew, and do ballroom dancing with my husband. Also, I’m a member of Daughters of the Revolution and promote the Constitution to schools and libraries.
What historical figure do you admire and why? I’m fond of Suzannah Spurgeon. I have researched her life, visited Spurgeon’s church in London, and read her books. She was a quiet, sophisticated lady who struggled with illness. Despite her hardships, she supported her husband during his ministry and looked after him when his health was poor. She also raised two boys who became pastors. Someday, I hope to publish a book about her.
What is your current WIP? What can you tell us about it? I’m researching to write a mystery about a midwife from the 1870s. During that period, doctors began to deliver more babies because they offered new ideas and techniques. In essence they took jobs from the women who typically cared for mothers in labor.
What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer? Write. Write. Write. If you want to write for publication, that will be different from creative writing you learn in school. Be prepared to accept criticism. You can learn from it but realize not everyone will like your work. Plan to attend writing conferences and learn what editors want.
