Her husband—a friend to Mark Twain, mentor to Lewis Carroll, and the man C.S. Lewis called his “master”—was one of the greatest Christian writers of the Victorian era. She was his hidden gem, the bulwark and bastion on which he could lean. Though she was an accomplished musician and singer, an advocate for the poor and neglected, and a published author, she didn’t need the spotlight, but was content to be her husband’s biggest fan and companion. She bore eleven children and adopted and cared for several others. Enduring hardships few of us will ever experience, this petite woman faced them with courage and strength.
Her name was Louisa MacDonald.

Canty, Jolyn. Far Above Rubies: The Life of Louisa Macdonald. NP: The Works of George Macdonald, 2021.
Louisa Macdonald was the wife of author George Macdonald. Jolyn Canty used the letters of Louisa and George as well as the biographies written by sons Greville and Ronald to create this book. Because Canty was careful not to create dialogue there are times when the story is a bit stiff. She did include much interesting information which readers of George Macdonald will enjoy. Readers will learn of the difficulties and disappointments Louisa faced in her life. They will also learn how these things strengthened her faith. Louisa was a good wife and mother and has lessons to teach those of us in those roles.
I am not sure how much usefulness Far Above Rubies has for a K-12 Christian school library. It would be useful for anyone who is researching George Macdonald as there is a lot of information about the lives of Louisa and George.
I received a complimentary copy of Far Above Rubies. This is my honest review.
