“Why didn’t you ever tell me about it?” he prodded.
Her mouth hung open as she stared at him. “I forgot our drinks,” she said, then she turned away. Removing an orange juice carafe from the refrigerator, she filled their glasses and chose the chair across the table from him. “You never asked about my job or why I love it. And then, you changed the subject whenever I mentioned baking.” Eyes lowered, she prayed a silent grace, then placed a small omelet onto a toasted roll.
Mark took a sip of his juice, staring at her. Like she had said earlier, he’d always interrupted her when she tried to tell him. There wasn’t a way to right that wrong.
“You really enjoy toiling in a kitchen all day?” he asked.
“Yes, sir.” She wiped her mouth with a napkin. “Satisfaction to the nth degree.”
“What makes you love the work so much?”
“For starters, I control the environment. I mostly work alone, but Mom and Mellie will help me this week on Monday and Tuesday. K.C. will help all week.”
Mark’s hand trembled. Food fell off his fork. “Hodges? Ace’s friend?”
“I know. Most people react the same way. He’s a superb baker.” She reached for another napkin. “He blocked off five days to get us over the hump next week. After this job, he is officially off bake detail. He has other obligations. Thank God for his support. He’s a huge help.”
She paused, glanced at Mark, and then continued. “Next week we have four other fundraisers to plan for. Mom and Mellie will work on those.”
Unknown to Mark, Pamela led a whole other life. And K.C. Hodges, man about town, baked. Did he make house calls? Mark sipped juice while his brain demanded answers.
About the Author
E. C. Jackson began her writing career with the full-length play Pajama Party. Thirty-one years later, she adapted the play into Pajama Party: The Story, a companion book to the second book in the five-book standalone Hope series.
Jackson’s favorite pastime is reading fiction. She enjoys taking the journey along with the characters in the books. That also led to her unorthodox approach to story writing. Her vision for each book she writes is to immerse readers into the storyline so they become connected with each character.
