Multicultural Children’s Book Day – Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021 (1/29/21) is in its 8th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

Jackson, Gwen. Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams. Illustrated by Lissa Calvert. Victoria, BC: Friesen Press 2016.

Summary from the author’s website

Winter is coming, but the little black bear, Lump Lump, isn’t ready to go to sleep! With the help of his mother, the wise Blue Bird, and his forest friends, Lump Lump gathers materials for Spider Woman to weave him a Blanket of Dreams. Inspired by Navajo/Diné culture and folklore, and featuring the work of famed weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas, this beautiful tale of family and friends takes the reader on a journey through the spectacular traditions and landscapes of the Southwest.

My Review

By outward appearances I expected Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams to be a picture book for younger elementary children. However, it is more of a storybook with pictures. Words dominate the pages and illustrations do not appear on every page. Gwen Jackson researched Navajo culture and folklore in order to write the story which incorporates what she learned. I did not find the story to flow as smoothly as I would have expected in a storybook for elementary students. Adults who have an interest in Native culture will probably enjoy Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams but I’m not sure the book will hold the interest of most elementary students.

My favorite part of the book is actually the illustrations. Illustrator Lissa Calvert apparently studied the landscape of the Navajo Reservation. If I had to guess the location of the story based on the illustrations, I would say the Northern part of the reservation near Monument Valley. I loved her illustrations and feel they do an excellent job of portraying the setting of the story. Her depiction of the Navajo weaving appears to be accurate.

Author Gwen Jackson has no apparent ties to the Navajo people all though she does appear to have ties to the Nanticoke Indian community. Her website has links to educational activities that parents, teachers and librarians may be interested in, but not all of the links lead to active. resources. The dedication page does list Navajo weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas as a contributor.  The subtitle states the book was inspired by Navajo culture and folklore – a bibliography at the end of the folklore consulted and of books on the Navajo culture would have made this book more useful for the school market.

Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams is appropriate for K-12 Christian school libraries that include folklore and religious stories of other cultures in their collection. Because it is heavy on text, the book is most appropriate for grades 3 and up.

I received a complimentary copy of Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams. This is my honest review.
