Certain they are well on their way to sisterhood, each girl is floored when Tillie’s lousy-excuse-for-a-father puts in an appearance after a six-year absence. Too bad “lousy dad repellant” doesn’t come in a can. Even though Tillie’s dad has sobered up and is determined to make amends, Tillie would rather he just disappear again. If he stays, “Operation: Secret Sisters” may need to be renamed “Operation: Not Gonna Happen.”
If that’s not bad enough, the biggest bully in seventh grade comes over often and wishes he could call the West’s farmhouse “home.” When the bully’s abusive dad shows up as well, Ginnie thinks it’s time to change her family’s motto from “When you’re here, you’re family” to “There’s no more room at the West’s.”

MY REVIEW
Being West is Best is book four in the Ginnie West Adventure series by Monique Bucheger. There is a lot going on in this almost 300-page book which takes place immediately following book 3 and only covers a very short time frame. There isn’t time for a reader to get bored – it feels like crisis after crisis which keeps the story moving forward.
When dealing with abusive relationships or blended families, situations can change in an instant which is probably why it seems like there is a lot going on. As the story starts the kids are dealing with the fallout from the phone call from Tillie’s birth father that ended book 3. They also continue to help Pierce deal with his abusive father. Monique Bucheger understands many of these situations as a foster mom. I appreciate her willingness to incorporate these experiences into books for kids so that more kids can see themselves in the books they read. I look forward to reading more in this series, which I hope will be coming soon.
Because of the issues dealt with in Being West is Best, it is most appropriate for middle school patrons in a K-12 Christian school library.
