Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network—field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.
Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy that just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the too-intelligent Margot, but how to convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?
Amidst biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them, but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save them all from the very secrets that brought them together.

MY REVIEW
A Song Unheard is book 2 in the shadows over England series. I have not read any of the other books in this series but I did not feel I was missing any information. I would like to read the other books in the series.
The book has several European settings – London, Brussels, and Aberystwyrh. I was excited to see Aberystwyrh, Wales figure so prominently – I had never heard of this city before last year when a friend moved near there.
Roseanna White has written a well-crafted story about World War I. Her story tells of Belgium refugee musicians sponsored by a couple of unmarried sisters in Wales during the war. She tells of the life of pickpockets who do what they can to get money for living in London . She tells the story of hiding in plain sight in Belgium. Through all of these stories the love of God is evident. God’s love can be found in math, in music, and in the love of others.
Margot, who is a young teenager in A Song Unheard figures prominently in Roseanna White’s upcoming book The Number of Love – book 1 in The Codebreakers series. Roseanna White’s style reminds me of the many novels by the Thoenes.
I would not hesitate to add A Song Unheard to my K-12 Christian school library. I might even let mature 5th graders read the book.
I want to thank JustRead Publicity Tours for the complimentary copy of A Song Unheard.
THE CHARACTERS
Margot – a very intelligent young teen. Before her father died he called her his secret weapon. He told everyone he had a key to his code – not telling them that his daughter was the key. At the start of World War I everyone wants the key to the code. She becomes friends of sorts with the German officer who is living in the same home as she is. In the end, he helps her and those she loves escape from German-occupied Belgium.
Lukas – a talented and good-looking violinist. He knows what the key to the code is and will do whatever he can to protect his mother and Margot from those who seek the key to the code. He has been smuggled out of Belgium to play in an orchestra in Wales to raise money for the Belgium refugee fund. English intelligence believes him to have the key to the code. Before he knows that Willa is trying to find the key, he agrees to tutor Willa on the violin and in the process a romance develops.
Willa – a street urchin really who is growing up. She was abandoned by her parents and taken in by Barclay and his “family” of orphans. They are professional pick pockets. Willa has captured the attention of Mr. V, a member of the English intelligence community. He hires Willa to play a role to find the key they are sure Lukas carries with him. Willa is a violin prodigy – she has never taken a lesson and has an old beat up violin. She can play pieces almost without flaw after hearing them just once or twice. Lukas hears Willa play and agrees to tutor her, although she is better than he is.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself.
Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary.
