A Sick Day for Amos McGee

Stead, Philip C. A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Illustrated by Erin E. Stead. New York: Roaring Brook Press, 2010.

I recently read A Sick Day for Amos McGee to my littles as part of the Caldecott unit I am doing with grades K-5. I used the guided reading unit by Selma Dawani as I read the story. (I am not an affiliate of Buy Sell Teach – I just like this resource.)

Sometimes I think children forget that adults can get sick and need time to rest just like they do at times. A Sick Day for Amos McGee tells the story of a zookeeper who has to stay home from work because he is ill. His friends from the zoo come to visit him and keep him company. Philip Stead has written a story little ones can relate to. The illustrations of Erin Stead help keep the child engaged during the reading of the book. A Sick Day for Amos McGee was awarded the Caldecott Medal for the best picture book illustrations.
