Dalgliesh, Alice. The Thanksgiving Story. Illustrated by Helen Sewell. New York: Scholastic, Inc. 1954, 1982.
I like to read stories which correspond to holidays when it is appropriate. The Thanksgiving Story by Alice Dalgliesh tells the story of the Pilgrims leading up to the first Thanksgiving. She uses one family of children – The Hopkins Family – to tell the story. The Hopkins family is the family that increased in size on the trip due to the birth of Oceanus. The book appears to be historically accurate. Helen Sewell’s illustrations seem quite stiff – almost doll-like. They did win her a Caldecott Honor. I think The Thanksgiving Story is a great one to share this time of year. Not only does it tell a historically accurate version of the Thanksgiving story, it also is a Caldecott book. I will include this book in my Caldecott unit after the first of the year.
